Freelance writing

Saying that Jane Sutter is an award-winning writer with more than 35 years of experience writing for newspapers, magazines and websites doesn’t capture the wide range of her abilities. Jane can craft copy that ranges from the serious (she’s won awards for editorial writing) to the light-hearted (another area of achievement). Jane works with clients to know their targeted demographics and she then writes appropriate articles and marketing copy.  Read her article on photo/document conservationist Gary Albright and the amazing non-profit Eight4WorldHope, which builds schools in Jamaica. Both appear in Rochester Magazine.  Another magazine client is NETWORK Lobby, a Catholic Social Justice organization that produces a quarterly magazine called Connection. Jane recently wrote an article on the group’s Young Adult Leadership Lab (YALL.) Jane has written articles on the Top 100 companies for the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester: Taylor the Builders  and for the annual Top 100 Workplaces,  such as Isaac Heating and Air Conditioning. (Cick on links for stories.) She also writes regularly for the quarterly Creating a Safe Environment Newsletter published by the 12-county Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, N.Y. Recent articles include how to know if your child is ready for a cell phone and how to teach your child to be safe if home alone.  Jane has contributed articles to Research at RIT Magazine and Mushing Magazine –her story focused on a Cornell University professor who does research on sled dogs and nutrition.

Editing

Have you noticed that award-winning writers always thank their editors, and book authors are effusive in their praise of their editors in those back-of-the-book acknowledgements? Jane’s superb editing skills have earned her an excellent reputation among aspiring book authors — people who have a compelling story but need a strong editor/coach to guide them. Jane has helped many writers take C-level copy and turn it into A+ prose. Whether your writing is intended for a book, blog, magazine, website or academic publication, Jane can edit it so it’s both compelling and clear, not to mention free of any errors – spelling, grammar and punctuation. Book Publishing

Interested in independently publishing your book? We can take care of all the details, from small (like getting an ISBN number) to large (finding the right printer) and everything in between: writing and/or editing the book, designing the cover and inside pages, and developing and executing strategies for marketing, publicity and social media. Jane knows the myriad of steps, including marketing, to produce a quality book to appeal to its targeted audience.Jane has 10 years of experience in self-publishing, both her own books and those written by others including novels by her husband, G.A. Brandt, and Dellenna Harper (with whom Jane co-wrote Dellenna’s memoir God’s Teardrop: My journey of healing from addiction and prostitution). Click here to read what her clients say. Jane has written three books of nostalgia about her hometown in Burlington, Iowa. Her first title was Sutter’s Sodas Satisfy: A Memoir of 90 Years of Sutter Drug Co.,  the top seller of 2015 at Burlington By The Book. Click here to read the story in The Hawk Eye. The book was honored at the Self-Published Book Festival in Rochester, N.Y. Since then, Jane has written two books with chapters on a variety of other businesses that were popular in Jane’s hometown. Beloved Burlington: Featuring businesses you knew and loved!    and the follow-up Volume II of the same title. (Read the story in The Hawk Eye.)

Book design

For clients looking for an award-winning book designer, Jane recommends Susan Welt. Jane and Susan have proven to be an effective team to help clients achieve their dream of producing a book that tells a compelling story and looks like a New York Times best seller! Public Relations

When it comes to getting attention from the media, having expert help is key. Jane knows what makes a good story, having been a journalist for more than 30 years. For much of that she was on the receiving end of press releases and story pitches. Jane has extensive contacts at media outlets in the Rochester, N.Y., area, and has had great success getting attention for clients and non-profits.

Marketing

If you’re a small business owner, we can put together a package of services including social media, website content, electronic newsletters, events and more to help you reach new clients. If you’re a book author, we’ll design a powerful marketing plan for launching your book and keeping the sales coming. Jane will draw on her own experience as a book author, including her lines-out-the-door book signing event that resulted in a sellout!

Workshops/public speaking

Jane’s experience in self-publishing has made her a popular workshop instructor at public libraries.  She can speak on a variety of topics: book writing and publishing, social media strategy, effective public relations, successful marketing techniques, media trends and more. Public speaking engagements and workshops have taken place at Writers and Books, Tipping Point Communications, Greater Rochester SCORE, Rochester Women’s Network, Rochester Brainery and Women’s Club of Pittsford.
